The quickest way
for the average golfer to drop 5 strokes is to become a better
putter. How many three putts did you have in your last round? How
many putts from within 5 feet did you miss? The old adage “drive
for show, putt for dough” could not be more accurate. Here is a
drill to help you make more of those short putts and get rid of
those three putts:
Find a straight
putt; line up four balls from two feet. Make em! Do it again. If you
miss one start over. When you have made 8 in a row, move to a
three-foot putt. Keep going until you have made 8 in a row from 5
feet. When you are done you will have made 32 straight putts.
That’s 32 straight times you have seen and heard the ball fall
over the front lip and into the bottom of the cup. That’s what
they call “positive reinforcement.” When you have confidence
that you can make the short putt, your long putting becomes easier,
which actually leads to shorter second putts and less three putts.
Once you get comfortable with this, start with the five
footer and go back to eight feet. Soon enough you will be a deadly
putter from within ten feet.
The beauty of this
is that it is not a mechanical drill, but a feel and mental drill
that has an immediate impact on your game.
Give it a try, and
watch the results, you will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly
you stop the dreaded “three whip,” “three wiggle,”
“snake,” “tre whack,” etc.etc.
